This opinion is not necessarily objective in that I am an avid bass heavy rock spot, where music Ampeg is a registered very present. I have not tried before 3000 amp and I do no versatility. As it is said!

This opinion concerns an Ampeg SVT CL probably produced around 1999-2000 (Logo "SVT Classic" written in blue and red):

I do not know si'l are differences with the SVT products these days (but if so, what should be minor differences)
Note that the gray circle on the canvas before disgusting is due to the presence of a fan, I would have seen on the back or with a more thoughtful ...

Features:
Amplifier while low watt bulbs of 300W in 2 or 4 ohms.
Tubes: 3 x 12AX7 2 x 12AU7 x 6 6550

Dimensions:
Width: 60.96 cm
Height: 29.21 cm
Depth: 33 cm
Weight: 36.3 kg
I highly recommend the use of a flight case with four butterfly for transport. The price of the machine ...
Complete connectivity:

On the front:
Entries and 0dB-15dB

On the back:
- Exit "slave out" Jack (I think it only serves to enter another amp to chain two, otherwise there is overlap with the exit "preamp out")
- Exit "ball out" XLR
- Exit "Preamp Out" / input "power amp in" by Jack
- Two HP Output Jack and Speakon in

This amp is an amp "roots" with a particular grain, to the attention of amateurs and professionals. Direct connection "in the low amp" no effect gives this result we can regret the absence of leadership mute the signal to an output tuner.

At the back of the amp, there is also a cross of ground (to be activated in case of buzz), and two trim + 4 LEDs to adjust the bias.

Settings:
On the front left to right:
- knob gain
- Two inters: Ultra Hi / Lo Ultra
- knob Bass
- Midrange knob coupled with a 5-way cross "Frequency"
- knob Treble
- Master knob

Two interstitial used to power the amp.
There is a small procedure to be followed:

CAUTION not to be trapped: The position of inters I was at the top, unlike most electrical appliances where they usually place the position "on" down!

Ignition:
The inter Standby must be 0.
Put the Power of a cross.
Wait five minutes (heat lamps but do not receive high voltage) the LED indicator is red.
Put the cross on a standby. This sends the high voltage in the lamps of the power section. The LED indicator turns green (not always instantly by the way) the amp is ready to play.

Pause:
To save the lamps during breaks, it is possible to inter Standby O. This has the effect of leaving the lights in the heating position, but off the high voltage. The LED indicator goes back to red (not immediately).

Extinction:
Opinions differ on how to extinction of a tube amp.
The procedure most argued that I found is that described by the company Analog Bros:
While the amp is running (and Standby Power on 1), there must be only inter Power 0. (Leaving the Standby on an inter!)
The effect is to completely empty the capacitors and prolong their life.
Within minutes, you must return the inter standby to 0 in order not to be surprised at the next ignition.

It is strongly recommended not to move the amp as the lamps have cooled. Hot lamps are sensitive to shocks.

Small details:
The impedance switch
It can be confusing.
Following information obtained directly from Ampeg, this one is 4 ohms:

And here we are 2 ohms:

Connection of speakers
Following my reading on the Net, it seems preferable to wire the speakers in or Speakon cables with the largest section possible and as short as possible.
- The Speakon help prevent errors in connection with the dramatic Jacks (one day, I shuttered my HP Jacks in the effects loop instead of the HP output. A little, and my output transformer are passed. ..)
- Taking Speakon agrees to spend tens of amps, not Jack.
- Large section cables avoid loss of power and dampen the effect against the current (the current produced by the cabinet when he puts in place)

So I made two cable 4mm ² Speakon Neutrik home, there I am alone.

UTILIZATION

Simple setup: Yes, there are the standard settings of many bass amps. I was not out of place to the extent that they are exactly the same settings as my old Fender BXR300, except that the lower settings are much more effective!

Sound: AMPEG RULES! There is a considerable reserve of power. Any action on the Master knob means more ...
Note the possibility of obtaining a beautiful sound full, new to me who had so far joué than transistor amplifiers.
This amp gives the best of himself to large volume. So I think any test in-store or at home or distorted. The real test is in concert with the drummer on one side and the other guitar amp! And that means that this amp was in the belly.

Manual: It is 8 pages including 2 of the legal warnings, so it is unfortunately not nearly enough (downloadable from the official page of Ampeg). That's why I intend to compile all my info here!

Note that the customer service at Ampeg seems cool: While I only buy the second hand market, they always answered all my questions via email within 24 hours (as long to ask them in English)

Something still quite annoying with this amp is that you can not play 8 Ohms (it works in 2 or 4 Ohms)
I was hoping, by purchasing two cabs SVT410HE (8 ohms the speaker) can make a speaker in small rooms and two in the biggest concerts.
Can it! Unless you buy a special cab as SVT410HLF (which is 4 Ohms, but for weight and size well in excess of one of my speakers)

It would have been sufficient a few turns of output transformer in addition to that it goes into 8 ohms. Too bad ...

SOUNDS

It suits my style of music. Miss more than that after two years of frantic saving ...

I play this amp with a bass Vox Custom, compression EBS and two Ampeg cabs SVT410. And it sends!

OVERALL OPINION

I use it since November 2007.
After many concerts, I feel we left for a stretch of road together!
I thought the only use of the big scenes, but even in a cafe-concert, I'm reluctant to go ...

Note that the purchase price is nine, despite these times of global competition, very high. The interview is also (changing lamps and bias settings). But on the second hand market is the kind of amp that does not lose value if it remains in good condition.

Also note that the weight of the head involves the use of a flight case, and a mass of about 42 kgs compact is not without some risks to the vertebrae. It is a problem which must be considered before buying: Do I have the right vehicle for transport?
