Ampeg PB112 & PB210 PortaBass Cabinets

Ampeg PB-112HPublished on 09/07/04 at 15:00
These were clearance priced at the Guitar
Center at $249 for the 1x12 and $289 for
the 2x10, including the wheels, no covers.

I was already using a PB250 head with a
1x12, so the 2nd 1x12 is a back-up, and
the 2x10 is for use with bigger heads.

I like the classic tone of Ampeg gear and
these units are so light and compact that
most of my other cabinets see little use
anymore. The luggage-style wheels with a
telescoping handle are handy, but these
cabs are so light, they could have maybe
not even included it. OTOH, the cab with
the luggage rig makes a good cart to load
with a head and junk bag as well, so that

and often you can load in entirely in one
easy trip.

These cabs all have a horn driver with an
attenuator dial. If you're into fretless
and hollow bodies, this is an especially
cool feature. Also there's a little flip
thingy on the bottom to tip the cab up so
you don't send half of your sound right
into the carpet.

The steel grilles make it easy to pile
stuff into the truck without worry about
tearing a cloth or damaging a cone.

They are expensive. If it weren't for the
really great clearance price, I'm not sure
I'd ever have bought them.

Also, they are all 4 ohm cabinets, so you
need a head that can drive 2 ohms if you
want to combine them.

Much has been described above. Not yet
mentioned is that each cab has a pair of
SpeakOn and a pair of 1/4" jacks, black
fuzzy carpet covering, and the drivers
feature didymium magnets to save weight
and drive up cost.

The 1x12 is sort of a cube, but the 2x10
is vertically arrayed, although you could
tip it on its side
