    an essential Roland!

Roland JD-990 Super JDPublished on 09/11/14 at 10:20
(This content has been automatically translated from French)
Technical data sheet. Possibility of expansion cards.

    UTILIZATION

The sound editing is straightforward but in internal sounds on the maps are not readily available. It takes time to be remembered in the road. But that is the case!

    SOUNDS

Sounds basic but sound good with vintage c is just huge map. We leave very voluptuous layers present, the bass sounds suffer from a lack of velocity but there are sounds mc 202 and other mythical Roland synths.

    OVERALL OPINION

For six months, I was taken aback at first, but in use, this rack offers huge opportunities. I advise a lot but you have to find at an affordable price ...

sound module, sound close to the JD 800 with more waves PCM
no keyboard, two main outputs + auxiliary Midi in out thru
embeds enough Intgr effects reverb, modulation and more.
24 voice polyphony (limit for large set-up MIDI and performance)
    controllers and sounds ditable
256 sounds, presets A and B, internal and Map
Ralistes few sounds but with a quality 1992

    UTILIZATION

excellent manual also franais but trs large
Using relatively easy with a large screen logic
and use of lists by pressing the scroll button main
Edition easy, dtails per module, or with a view of four layers complte
    4 layers architecture.
The difficulty is a little utility menu that has a few main functions and the introduction particulirement sounds of the SR-JV cards must be appealed only by the menu, then copy it to a menu Temporary finally be transmitted to the card or internal, as the presets can be chang.
Systm amlior on the JV-1080 and 2080, but not forcment sounds.

    SOUNDS

Excellent and easy to search for new sounds, not so raliste,
not really for brass or sax
guitars that there are dpend fusion INTERESTED.
PCM is the basic line of the D-50 amlior.
We make some great vintage sounds of Fast Fashion, leads, FX or pads that have a fantastic grain particulirement warm and Russian, with lots of CONTRL can even pressure on the keyboard. Excellent expression of all types and settings.
A lot of programmed sounds by Eric Persing (Spectrasonics) while Roland, super sounds and music, I feel like we lost Roland excellent programmer, nothing new today.

    OVERALL OPINION

The JD 990, I use it for 15 years, I love it and I keep it, he has a personality and a single grain that Roland would not try. not a JV, it has a more powerful sound is a synthesis of the family JD.
Excellent choice I do it again.
The module is quite heavy, 2 Rack Unit I suggest you leave it in your studio. (Heavier that the Roland modules plupars Next)
I used full of synth Roland Jupiter and Juno are the best in analog, and also the D 50 I think it replaces and is much more.
If you find one, buy it, despite the ergonomics is a bit rough on some points.

    2-Rack units
Extensions SRJV-card (I recommend the vingtage synth)

Compared with current machines, it lacks a little in performance or sound patch, but those present are so good ... Moreover, the sysex (or. Mid) is essential for the exchange of sounds. Much like the D70, do not rush circuit and there should be a lag slightly larger than the average for transfers to be perfect.
There is a converter JD800 to JD990 sounds.
Otherwise the screen is really good, readable and clear, the machine is easy to access. VALUE button is really convenient. I did not feel limiting when the polyphony of the unit.

    UTILIZATION

    Easy!
Performance, patches, just to be guided! The possibility of adding a card SRJV is fine. Personally I put the vingtage synth.
A mode for editing, a mode for the game, the logic of the device is easy.

    SOUNDS

Tablecloths ... pfffff ... huge, fat, thick, low in the bass sounded really ... But the acute is not bad either. clear, powerful. To compare, the K2000 comes down in less serious! and is thinner.

Essential to grow serious, it's really in his element.

    the filter is very good.

    Hummmm sounds of flutes.

    OVERALL OPINION

    Indispensable!

    - With experience, you do again this choice? ... More ways than one
Once it is in your set, it's hard to part with it.

    A great synth!

Essentiellent 128 preset, 64 users, 16 performances, a card slot SRJV, a pcm card slot and patch. A large screen for editing and 24-voice polyphony.

    UTILIZATION

Usage is quite simple thanks to its large screen, the logic of the menus is not very complicated. Used to it very quickly!

    SOUNDS

The sounds!! ah! the sounds of the Super JD.
The preset banks A & B does not reveal the possibilities of JD990, it must make its own sound, behave like a true synthetic, and the JD will reward you!

As we all know a card is needed for a great expander is of course the SRJV04 "Vintage Synth", playing gently with the effects and sometimes add an external reverb, we arrive at some wonderful things.
It sounds really good, it excellent on tablecloths, synth sounds in general.

    OVERALL OPINION

I use it for 12 years, and each day I fellicite of this purchase, it's a real synthesizer, digital as we like, who lives!!
What can we blame him? the polyphony of 24 voices, 4 partial effect using a patch, it is reduced to 6 voice polyphony! but generally we use a partial or two for most sounds.
But we can not have everything, I think Roland has had to decide between quality of synthesis and high polyphony compared to the power of the machine.
I ask myself sometimes to take a second to solve this problem when using a lot of sounds in a sequence such as a JD dedicated to intensive groundwater polyphony and another for the rest.
    I recommend this expander.

Based on todays standard it's a little low on the avalible patches and voices. I love the ability to edit a digital bassed synth from the front screen. Only now are they getting screens that show this much detail on a synth to edit it from. I think there are 6 outs, standard midi I,O,T, Strange ass Plug for power. 2 slots in the front for Memory card and Rom's, and a internal JV card (most people use the Vintage card)

    Price paid

    $1200

    UTILIZATION

Other than it's a Roland and it is at the start of rolands use of rolands combo buttons it's one of my favorate rackmounts. Editing is as close to a pc as I have seen on a synth without knobs and sliders.

Built like a Tank. I would replace it again....and again..... and Again.... Verry happy with the build of this unit other than the odd power cord.

    SOUNDS

One of the best products from roland in the early 90's. It set the scope for the JV-1080,JV-2080 and XV line. One of the Big thing's they was exploiting in the XV line was the fact that it had the JD waves. It has crisp basses, lush strings, excelent pads. You can press down or up to darken or weeken the sound. I have the Vintage card installed in mine so I can pull up any of the patches from that as well as the ones made specialy for the JD-990. I use a card so I have a extra 64 presets or I place on the 3 sets of rom/card in for added pleasure

    OVERALL OPINION

This thing gets used. All the stuff in the studio is a workhorse and has it's purpose. This thing has been around for along time and I have never thought about droping it back in the market. I use it alone, as a layering device.
