This book is the reprint reviewed, expanded and much improved from "Master your DX" by the same author, released in the 80 ... This book was written in a somewhat paradoxical ... The DX7 has been released in its unprecedented commercial success, yet few knew the owners of the program, firstly baffled by what the FM, and secondly, by the interface of the machine.
Many owners were content with this machine presets, bought or exchanged sounds ... The book "Master your DX" ambition was to familiarize the happy owners of the DX7 with FM and its interface ...
Possessing a machine capable of FM, and having acquired a TX802 (rack version of the DX7 II) and a TG77 (Rack version of the SY77), I decided to get serious about FM. It is against this background that I acquired this book ... Meanwhile, I also bought two other books in English "Yamaha DX7" Yasuhido by Fukuda, and the "Complete DX7" II by Howard Massey.
I do not have the first edition "Master your DX", but it should be noted that this book contains many additions compared to the first edition, including an explanation of all the ideas for new software FM like FM8, which allows to understand the principles, whatever the software or the synthesizer used ...
The book begins by recalling what a sound, musical or not, then explain what the FM and how it generates a sound with FM (DX7 and FM8 as an example) ...

With sheets of sound educational purposes to understand the role of each parameter ...
Compared to other books purchased, the three books complement each other well, each of which may contain information or "tricks" that others do not ...
I would say, to simplify, that the Cassagnau is clearer than the Fukuda, most complete on the "sound theory", and less time consuming and daunting as Massey (which provides for handling each of the parameters of DX to fully understand this synth ) ...
French-language book indispensable for anyone who wants to understand and learn the FM, and even useful for those who understood it to be perfect or to learn some stuff ...
Paradoxically, the process of Alain Cassagnau, regarding the FM, is more intuitive than theoretical (after further consideration, I disagree with some points made by this book, but these disagreements are not merely theoretical importance of FM, Alain Cassagnau control "by ear"), which is very useful because it allows the reader to learn, understand, and grow in FM without having to delve into complex mathematical concepts that could alienate people who are allergic to this discipline ..
In any case I myself learned a lot and made great progress in the FM.
The (-), because it must be some, this book is sold as a memory graduate of A4 sheets connected, which is not dramatic because we do not buy it for its binding, but its contents ... But hey, some giving some importance to the form, or rare items ...
It could have contained more elements that are found in the Fukuda or Massey, and some mathematical aspects, for aficionados, in boxes, for example, without detracting from the intuitive approach to FM which is not definitely the right, insofar as it can unite everyone ... But a small gesture for Matheux / Physicists might have been welcome ... But nothing serious, the book is sufficient in itself and the happy possessor of this book will be under no obligation to join me to get books in English, these acquisitions was due to a sudden whim, binged forcing me to buy everything I going to hand ... These small (-), minor, explaining that I put 8 and not 10 ...
I would do without a doubt this choice. For 20 or 25 Euros, you get several months of rapid understanding of this synthesis, and manage to make your own sounds fairly easy (relatively, much easier than before reading this book anyway) ...
