The neck is maple (light wood) unvarnished, and is sometimes covered with rosewood fingerboard. I do not know what is the influence on the sound.
Sterling I tried was with rosewood buttons.

In a nutshell: A Sterling, it's like a Stingray, with less defects.

The defects of the Stingray (I have one, while the Sterling which I speak was just a test at a store) are in my opinion:

Weight -> Sterling is much more mild. At its on the other hand I have not heard of difference (tests done on the same day at the same place on the same amp)

Versatility -> Sterling is a Stingray has more balance to pass the mic serie a parrallel or use only one winding. It opens the door finally has new sounds richer and not be confined to the rock so special Stingray.
