Sennheiser's will introduce its new high-end HD 800 headphones at Winter NAMM 2009, featuring a new type of transducer and an ear cup design.
This model, is reminescent of the Orpheus headphones, and uses a 56mm sound transducer — currently the largest to be found in dynamic headphones — and an ear cup design that directs sound waves to the ear at a slight angle.
The vibrating part of the diaphragm is not a circular surface area but a ring, designed to be able to set the entire air volume over the transducer into motion, generating the full-bodied sound of the HD 800. This annular design is designed to solve the problems relating to the dynamic transducer principle.
More details on the HD-800's design are available on the Sennheiser website.
