MOTU Midi Express 128Published on 12/28/15 at 01:55
I am using this with a Windows 10 Dell XPS touchscreen.
DAW: Ableton 9.5, Cubase Essentials, and Stagelight.
Old school midi gear: Oberheim MC-3000, Roland D-550, JV-2080, JP-8080, JD-800, VSynth, VR-760, Novation Supernova, Moog Little Phatty 1, DSI Prophet 08pe.

Initially, I've had no problems with this unit, until I began using Ableton. Live doesn't seem to want to recognize the drivers for it. When it does, it lists them in a way that they can't be edited. I think there needs to be new drivers written for this, as I am using the current driver set. It's possible there is no driver set for win 10 yet.

Working with it in cubase is great though. Only issue is that it doesn't seem to want to allow sys ex commands to data transfer some older gear like the D-550.
The express replaced a Yamaha UX 250, and it would be lovely if I could use both, but the drivers seem to conflict.

The Motu Midi express 128 works just as expected out of the box. Usb makes installation a snap, with no problems with installing or having it get recognized by your pc. I like the (simple but convenient) activity lights on the front, as well as the computer connection light. All inputs showed up in my sequencer hassle free. not to mention - easy to expand! So since its easy to expand you can always add on down the road which is what I will probably end up doing in the near future.

UTILIZATION

The only thing I’d like better is the 128 had it's OWN power and could act as a stand alone processor i.e the Unitor 8 that it replaced. I don’t always like to fire up my computer just to sit down and "noodle" at the beginning of a song idea. I DO wish they'd invent a midi interface that had both midi and usb capabilities where you could see the signal path
both input and output where you might see a midi signal loss more or less immediately.

OVERALL OPINION

Overall, the downside and some issues I was having are the unit does not stay connected to the computer. I always have to unplug and re plug the USB. But this could be something to do with my pc but not likely because I have never had this problem before with any other usb functioning device. After all, I should not have to write about a faulty product from a company with such a long history of making good software. One would think that their hardware would be top notch gear. But none the less this product is pretty stable and im glad we made this purchase and decided to go with the Motu Midi Express 128 I have tried more expensive midi controls and this one compares right with them for less of a price.
