Published on 06/25/18 at 00:23I have a Ibanez TS-7, a TS8008 clone, and now this TS9DX. It is built like a TANK! Sounds like it has quality components. Very smooth and creamy overdrive that doesn't break up....EVER, at any setting! I was going to sell mine as I got it in a trade for fixing a guitar but just couldn't let it go! Steve Vai used this for years (seen it on his pedalboard). Just a great Tube Screamer!

Published on 04/07/03 at 15:00I bought this awesome little guitar effect at Guitar Center for $110. I've been trying to get that SRV sound by changing pickups, different amp, and a boss blues driver pedal. I read that Stevie used the tube screamer so I took a chance.
This thing rocks!! After all this time and money all I needed was this little pedal. I'm sure the pickups and fender amp help but if you want a good blues sound or just increase the mid's from a single coil guitar this is it. Also, there are 4 different settings for the type of boost you want. The drive varies also which is good for me because I like to play clean a lot. You also have tone and level so you have plenty of leeway to get your sound.

I would have to say (if anything) is the green color. I sound like a woman when I say this but when your amplifier is silver and black along with all your wah pedal and effects rack and there's this green pedal. Looks kinda weird but who cares. If it was good enough for Stevie then it's good enough for me.
It's as good as any stomp pedal but a little bit heavier. Seems to be made very sturdy.
For playing the blues I would highly recomend this pedal. I played the tube screamer through a friends Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and it rocked. Of course he went out and bought one. Hey Ibanez, where's my commision. I play a fender fat strat through a small 15 watt fender reverb just for fun and jamming with friends so with the tube screamer it really rocks. The Boss Blues Driver should be discontinued or changes it's name to nice looking blue pedal.

TS9 mode is the classic mode, + mode is like a TS9 with just a little bit "extra", Hot mode has increased low-end grind, and Turbo mode just sounds like a fire-breathing gain beast! then, dial in the amount of dirt. EQ to taste with the tone control, and set the volume control as desired.
SOUND QUALITY
The pedal sounds great for guitar or bass. Most players will use it as a boost, where stepping on it adds a volume jump for a solo. I like to use it as a "low end tightener" - when engaged in front of an amp that's already driven hard with plenty of gain, this will tighten up the bottom frequencies and allow the guitar to cut through.
I'm not a huge fan of the Hot or Turbo modes, as they get a bit too fizzy for me. The TS9 mode sounds like it should, very similar to old Stevie Ray Vaughan records, and the + mode is where I like to leave it.
OVERALL OPINION
This is a solid product from Ibanez. It comes in a durable housing, so I'm not worried about gigging it. The sound quality is great for the price, and for tone freaks that like to tinker, the pedal can be modded to upgrade the components. If one wants to outsource a component upgrade - Keeley does a great job on this particular pedal, as does Analogman. Overall, this is a great value for the price.

The Ibanez TS-9DX Turbo Tube Screamer is an analog overdrive that while has no real tube inside of it, emulates a tube type distortion. The pedal is basic in make up, but does have one extra parameter that isn't found on the other tube screamers. It can be powered by either a 9 volt battery or power supply and isn't rack mountable as it is a stomp box. The pedal has a 1/4 inch input and output to plug your guitar and amp into into.

Having the extended array of parameters allows this to be a more versatile pedal than the TS9 and the TS808. I generally use this pedal for recording and for live shows with a Fender Strat and a '76 Fender Twin Reverb and I'm able to get some pretty awesome tones within this configuration, no matter what application I am using it for. This is overall a great sounding pedal and if you have ever used a tube screamer, you know what this can do.

Overall, while the Ibanez TS-9DX Turbo Tube Screamer isn't my favorite of the tube screamer line of pedals, it is the most versatile and still has a great sound.
