This is one serious sampler. When it comes to how you can sample and edit the sample I feel that there is nothing lacking. It makes the proces fast and easy. there are more features than I can list. But some of the non real time things that are very cool are parametric eq, compressor, DC offset corection. Where this box lacks is in the outputs lack of hard disk and the fx section is a litte less than i would like. I have mine loaded with a ten gig drive and 128 MB of ram. As well as the ten basic sample cd's from emu. I have more sounds in this box than i can count. Lets say a few thousand programs. and there is still 6 gigs left on the drive. It is huge.

UTILIZATION

This unit is about as easy as it could be but it is kinda like learning to use windows 3.1 or sompthing like that. It is a computer after all.

SOUNDS

The sound quality is fantastic. The filters live up to the hype. It is wide open to what ever you want to use it for. There is only two fx and they are useable but only lightly editable. When looking to my rating on this please reolize that I dont expect the fx to sound as good as the ones i get in dedicated units.

OVERALL OPINION

The construction is very solid. But the buttons are lacking. I have problems with a few of them now and getting new parts is not easy. As for the costomer support for this unit, EMU are very good.

I love this unit. It is something that i will own till i die. I dont think we will see a more powerfull line of hardware samplers since the world is going to the computer for this. I look forward to the day that i can get all the expansions for this thing cheap. I will continue to load this thing up. If I could only afford the RFX card, then this thing would be set. It in my opinion negates the need for all the outputs that can be added as it could do evrything other than master it's self.

Express opinion: missing some separate outputs and an output num home. possibility of an internal IDE hard drive or other solutions more interresting and more modern these days.

UTILIZATION

adept electro typed Modjo / Royksopp, (I know but I love anyway):
- Config simple
- Editing sounds a bit messy,
- Manual very clear English (not French I know
- Edition of the parameters from easy to difficult,

as indicated below, assignment of controllers not terrible (although it is implemented as a function) and the range of values always range 0 to 127.

SOUNDS

I have good clear AKAI S3000 series, and the EMU e5000 so I can compare a bit,
- Transparent? can be ...
- Effects: I find ways (no RFX32 in mine)
- Filters: hummmmmmmmmmmm, akai is clearly the pick, it's been almost feel sorry for these same generation of samplers
- Dynamic: sooooo boooonnnne

OVERALL OPINION

- Not long but enough to make me a good idea of my little beast
- 'Love the fact that it works without a PC and I get out what I want, with real output on a real console, not something that comes out of a PC polluted by noise on an output ELECTRONICS JACK! (Ok I exaggerate)
- Some models akai: MPC 1000, S3000, S3200 (I have one), CD 3000 (I have one, S3000 XL (... right, I), Ensoniq tested some time ago and stuff various tested as well. but he is doing better after I'm not a fan of samplers softs.
- Feature I like: the ROM cards, (ultra expensive on EBAY), and the arpergiateur cords. the flash rom (I did not)
- I do not like: the price and scarcity of options used: it's anything.

value for money: for the hardcore: sound very good for not too expensive (150 euros), after when compared with software products, will Verily love hard.

It features a sequencer with a few options (transpose cut ...) but no publisher or style grid step (that's real time) with the possibility of changing the sequence in progress (juke box)

UTILIZATION

The config is pretty simple (three MIDI modes: Omni poly or multi depending on whether you play one or more channels)

Edition type emu sound: a sampling method for the treatment of the sample (x looping pitch time compressor gain beat converter ... etc. There's already what to do if we know its sounds to choose) and a preset mode (48-way possible by preset keyboard range, velocity, fade, transpose, tuning, chorus, trigger mode, a envellope, filter, filter envelope, envellope auxiliary, 2 LFOs, and the section specific to emu cord: a total of 24 cords to the routing of modulation sources to the destination module and the programmable controllers in real time + 12 + ModWheel Pitchwheel footswitch + + volume + pan). Not bad but it takes a little getting used to as implementation.

For the effects you can choose between a master control or a preset setting (for both there are 2 types of effects and four items).

The manual is pretty clear but still lack some details especially at the menu and sample sequencer.

Personal, there's way to do good things but being a novice in terms of program changes galley bah I just compared to a machine groove box style edition with its style pattern.

SOUNDS

This is my 2 nd sampler so I find it difficult to talk about. That said I use a lot of banks to charge via cd and I must say that the output quality is comparable to the sounds of my XL7. The emu samplers are generally known to color the sound and it is true that the heat supplied is not the same as on the korg. I would say that the grain is slightly thinner which can be an advantage as a inconveniant (depending on what you want to do as a style of music).

The filters are not bad (low pass, band pass, high pass, notch, voice and morph phaseshift) and parameters but use with care (for pregnant gaffe).

The dynamics are good and sometimes too violent of sound perceived by the former (well it all depends on the preset settings that you do)

OVERALL OPINION

It has been three months since I use it and I'm not disappointed;
actually what I wanted from my es1 was a time of higher sampling and sample editing further what I have today.

Most of this sampler is probably enough builds upon the sampling mode and sampling time (well at the time of any computer everything is relative).

Bah least I think it's certainly the way to my taste noon which is a fair bit (especially in filters) and the lack of automation and editing sequencer (otherwise it would have made a bin self-contained unit with full)

I had a small es1 before and I had heard a mpc. I made this choice because having a machine emu I just wanted to test this method of synthesis (re-reading of samples).

Purchased Pre-Owned I find the prices quite competitive (up to the fact that I was still quite a hassle to find a storage device scsi cheap + price still exorbitant input options output).

If I had to redo the choice I would say that I will seek a model can be expandable to 128 channels if I have no complaints.

UTILIZATION

The general config is a bit confusing at first (menus and sub menus)
but is accessible via three buttons on the front + programmable
edition of the sounds is pretty complete but I do not like the edit mode envelopes (drawing not very representative)
fx at the rest of a classic
the manual does not go into details, no tricks, rather crude ...
The internal sequencer is much less interesting than a pc via external sequencer example with which one multiplies the comfort of work for the creation of song.
I must say that since I reconnected my computer and sequencer, sampler I found
more interest my eyes and my ears ...

31/12/2007 edit
after a little over a year of use
edition of the banks, presets and samples is rather difficult this can be daunting
but you can copy a preset "standard" to replace then the samples. This is particularly interesting To create a bank soon.

SOUNDS

Converters are more transparent than my old 4000 esi
effects are mild and without personnalitbr /> against by the filters are interesting but the digital resonator did not yet convinced.
dynamics is quite good
often lack the presets are finalized, but a gold mine of material sound
it is necessary to CRER has its own preset from the originals and use the patch coord system that transforms the modular synth or sampler in high-end expander.
edition: After a few explorations supplmentaires I find the sound possibilities are trs well made and I will add individual outputs.

OVERALL OPINION

A year and a half of use
I like 128 MB ram, 20GB internal SD (large storage banks)
the possibility to save the config and load at startup bank,
the dynamics of sound.
The true versatility of the machine, sampler, and synthtiseur expander.
I like less the sequencer, the config noon, fx

I used a esi 4000, an asr 10, a sp808
it is difficult to compare with other machines as they each have their particularitbr /> I bought used 450 euro in perfect state with 20 GB HDD, 128 ram and SCSI CD
Q / P excellent.
I think for the price I do it again this choice.
