Zoom had unveiled at NAMM its first Thunderbolt interface, the TAC-2. Some Japanese sites now offer the TAC-2R.

The Zoom TAC-2R has the same features as the TAC-2, with a few exceptions, but the main difference is the format. While the TAC-2 has a tabletop Apogee-style design, the TAC-2R is a rack-type with blue chassis and aluminum faceplate.

You’ll find on the TAC-2R the same H-Series mic preamps with 48V phantom power as well as a 24-bit / 192kHz AD/DA converter.

Specifications:

  • 2 XLR/TRS inputs with dedicated gain knobs
  • +48V Phantom power
  • Gain up to +60dB
  • Switchable Hi-Z instrument inputs
  • MIDI in and out
  • TRS headphone output with dedicated volume knob
  • TRS left and right analog outputs
  • Thunderbolt bus powered
  • Large output level knob
  • Dimensions: 113.9 × 176 × 46.2mm
  • Weight: 714g

Zoom did not list the TAC-2R on its website yet, and the Japanese retailers announce that they are available in limited quantities. The question is: why does Zoom offers two very similar audio interfaces at the same time? It is unknown at the present time wether the TAC-2R will ever go out of the archipelago.
