Very disappointing for 1000 bullets!!

By stefao69, 05/09/2013
I need a mobile interface, with 8 and 16 channels of preamp adat for mobile recording and concert. Normally coupled with my 16 digimax it would be the hair! Tested and used in cubase 6.5 mac mini i5, 4 GB of RAM and Xeon quad core pc 2.6 Ghz / 8 GB RAM running W7 Pro 64 Bit.

The drivers are stable in both worlds, the latencies are correct, for the acquisition of 24 simultaneous tracks, on the other hand impossible to clocquée externally with two digimax, and sometimes impossible to have 16 channels of ADAT at the same time !!

Easy installation.
Software integration disappointing, illegible, small quality DSP effects embedded pretty average, the reverb is zero ... compressor and EQs are correct but very difficult to use because of the size of the visual intreface. Not at all ergonomic.

I used about 6 months, I work sound for almost 20 years, I have a lot of experience in analog as digital, and here I must admit that this is not up to par, especially given its price. This card is loud, soft preamps and converters very deaf, I think Steinberg interfaces are more interesting in the same config, or when the metric halo for little more expensive!!
I would not recommend the purchase of this equipment!

robust .. and finally for PC!

PC .. and yes because Apple has long been the exclusive platform for MOTU gear. But then we can say that the brand has finally turned to the Windows world ...
After I separated from my 01V, I was looking for a multi I / O converter, preferably with LED VU meters on the front panel and can connect a preamp with adat to add entries.

I use it with:
-Synths (DSI, Kurzweil, Emu Orbit3)
-1 Battery "pad"
Micro-singing and perceived
A Focusrite preamp-8 i / o adat connected and toilet.

Due to the use of the IEEE port or usb, stability is really related to computer config .. To win a USB port on my computer (almost all taken by other equipment), I have first tried to use the IEEE Port (new card PCIe Texas instrument). But that shit at times to restart!
So stay on the usb and it seems to hold the road.
As against the driver seems to have trouble managing sharing, I can not open the control panel of the MOTU when Cubase is démmarré ... (I had no pblm with my old card RME HDSP96)
Side latency, it should be around 15ms @ 88KHz. I will try to check ...

The interface was recognized immediately, but must be set in the Windows device after install (yes, I keep the sound on my computer for video editing needs are on the same machine.)
on the other hand I have restart several times, as if the system is needed in order MOTU / / of my other USB devices also ..

The config is pretty easy (even more obvious that the routing matrix proposed by RME!). I still qq question on monitoring .. the sound is super strong low enough according to that selected as listening ..

Very detailed manual on CueMix accompanying MOTU.

it's good 3 months now.
I had moult interfaces before it (Hoonetech Echo Layla24, Tascam FW Yam01v96vcm).

The +:
- 8 analog inputs, dual i / o adat for a preamp
- VU meter front
- Built-in effects
- Finishing the pro
The -:
- Firewire port unstable home
- The green LED at the preamp (which indicates an input is connected) are too bright! (Visually quite overwhelming when you hump the night ..)
- I would have preferred a real knob for volume rather than a notched knob

Good Q / P
I may redo this choice, otherwise it would be a RME

controlling it with my iPad

The MOTU 896mkII Hybrid is a rackable unit firewire or USB interface that has 8 channels and comes with solid preamps and effects. You can use this as your interface with either a Mac or a PC. You will get no latency with processing effects with this unit and that is very important because I tend to use a lot of effects back and forth between my DAW and all of my gear. You can use your effects with the 896mk3 because it can also act as a stand alone unit or as the brain between your computer and gear.

This unit has really made me look at audio interfaces a different way, after using this I have no idea why I even wasted my time with some of the smaller/weaker interfaces in the past when I could have just had something like this. Yes it is more expensive than most of the smaller table top interfaces but you can just do some much more with it and the quality is so much better.

The preamps are warm and amazing, as long as your microphone is half way decent you will get amazing quality when recording vocals or instruments with this unit. The preamps are what really give you your sound, they are quiet and worth every single penny that this unit cost.

The only regret I have is not getting this unit when it first came out, I have only had it for a few months but I think that it came out long before I got my hands on it. I only came across it after going to a local trading event with a bunch of musicians. My favorite feature that I just recently found is that I can use my iPad with it. My iPad can now control all of the functions of the MOTU 896mkII, this was a little different to set up but it was not hard.

This is serious

I know Motu since the 80s without ever having invested in the equipment due to intense Protools ... I recently purchased a Motu 896mk3 Hybrid Used for 800 euros and there I realized that Motu is serious! Finally Mac PC mainly because they are not out of the woods!
Mac, a real treat ... with several types of use: Live recording of Jazz and other groups in theaters, with Logic Studio on two configurations: either with a 24-track analog console Soundcraft 500 1985 ... Not a breath of pet ... Up a potato ... That sound!, Either directly 16 tracks coupled with a preamp Presonus Digimax 8 channel ADAT Fs: Great musicianship, nothing to say
Quality preamps is the appointment system and overcomes the constraints of DSP effects rack wiring spaghetti! Clocks are good and sync without problem even without the cable being used as Wordsync optics with a short cable of 50 cm!

The drivers are super stable on both Mac USB Firewire that even with minimum latency. on the other hand PC when it was right to make a gaffe install correct CUE MIX THE REFUSE TO LAUNCH windows 7 and all eventually crash! surprising ... Normal ... So nothing new PC from Winblows 98 ...
Back in the world of the living, on Mac! Protools LE on 9 or 10 or Logic: Nickel, with a slight preference for Logic because with this Motu sounds almost as good as Protools HD and I know what I'm talking about ... (That said, this is just my opinion ...)
Well, at the note, the 9 is for the Mac because it is zero for Windows! .... Too bad, because with Samplitude ....

Mac no problem: we installed the latest driver and go, as it is written in aqueous manual. So at the PC, as I've said above, it installs clean and bang! it crashes all the sides and Motu is not even recognized most frequently (test with the same guaranteed result of my 3 PC audiovisual training center!) The implementation is very simple to have sound on I / O but the CueMix FX is not the most obvious to newcomers. Finally, as I have the Motu for about 1 month I'm sure things will get better with a little practice.
The manual is well and he tries to explain clearly the enormous possibilities of the system configuration.

I use it for about a month and a half. As I have always eaten there since Protools with all imaginable Digidesign interfaces and clocks often a little rock'n roll, this is a new world for me and very encouraging.
For now, the feature I like most is the small DSP that reminds me a bit TDM and especially musicality and power with a small card to 900 €!
Second small feature very fashionable and not least the possibility of an alternative USB at a time when the supply connection of portable Macs melting like snow in the sun!
A positive note just in passing: Save 24 tracks at once with Logic on my Macbook Pro 2008 on the internal drive as well with a latency of 32 samples for 3 hours without flinching, it's fun!
With my short experience on this system, I would do without this choice problem. Now go in 6 months when I'm in my 10th album recording live with Mix and Mastering and everything! ...
