Paid $175 for it in 1995 at a Guitar Trader.

It has lasted me 9 years and does not sound so bad at all. It handles 13 guage flatwound guitar strings fine.

The action is a little high, but so is the action on Dick Dale's Stratocaster. Some some styles of playing action isn't that important.
One thing that many people could find annoying is that the springs in the back that hold the bridge down vibrate and that tone gets picked up by the pickups.

It's decent.

Buying a squire today won't be the same as buying this one, so I couldn't say that you should take any of this advice towards buying a 2005 model or anything, but the quality difference between the Squire Strat and the Fender Strat doesn't justify the price difference.
