    MXR M288 Bass Octave Deluxe

MXR M288 Bass Octave DeluxePublished on 01/16/10 at 15:00
Blue, heavy duty aluminum stompbox, with three dials: Growl, Dry and Girth. Mid+ switch for mids boost. Standard heavy duty footswitch. Mono in and out, Powered with single 9V battery optional AC adapter.

Tried at a local music store. I was curious what changes MXR had made to the earlier Bass Octave, which I own.

Tracking seemed fine, and the Mid + switch helped to make the bass cut through a band mix. The Dry knob allows blending of octave and straight bass signal: all the way to the left produces a synth-like octave below the fretted note. Twiddling the Growl knob gives you a midrangy octave; Girth adds a deeper harmonic.

Not much, but I wish they had offered an Octave Up option as with the Bass POG. Some players have commented that tracking is spotty, bu that's not my experience. I suspect that these users have been trying to produce an octave below their already-low B string. In my experience, an Octaver works best when you play no lower than the open A string; the higher, the better, in fact.

As are all MXR products, the Bass Octave Deluxe is built like a nuclear bomb-proof bunker.

The MXR Bass Octave Deluxe is an affordable choice for bassists looking to add some depth or soloists looking for different sound. Mid + switch is a nice touch to help you cut through a band mix.

not bad, but not without breaking a 3-legged duck, its own right and is harmonious, it's late, on the other hand I think it lacks a bit of momentum for a rock style I'm not sure it fits, it makes me think of a more EBS by his side studio, transparent, we can push it but we feel that it is not his favorite records ...

    OVERALL OPINION

I wanted replaced my BOSS OC2 made in Japan, I think I'll keep it a while, she can not hold a candle to my ears and
The € 149 price is still an expensive ... € 90 to € -100 secondhand why not if one seeks a proper bass octaver but try it anyway especially when you see the secondhand BOSS OC2 Japan at 70 € or 60 € octacbass EBS ...
Product of the pedal MXR BASS and that's good for us, for it would be against even though they are a real thing and not just cut and paste of what already exists to scrape market share (EHX, EBS, Boss ...)
If not for the wealthy pedal Aguilar Octamizer worth a visit more, trying ...

I am very disappointed by this octaver quite expensive. By reading the data sheet on the website of MXR, I expected a better OC2, it is not. Growl sound supposed to reproduce the sound of the Boss is soft, but compared to my potato OC3. The girth does not interest me, too transparent, yet softer. What interested me in this pedal was the boost of the medium, because I use the OC3 without much direct sound to make a synth sound sub and I thought it lacked the precision compared to the clear sound of the bass. This boost of medium was therefore a boon to specify what sound synthebass, except that it acts only on its clear, I do not see the point, why change the sound of his bass when launching an octave?. .. In short, the OC3 Boss is cheaper and more effective, I have not noticed that the sustain was better on one or the other, when the precision, I do not play probably not fast enough hear a difference.
I will immediately send the pedal in germany, too bad for me I'll have to try before you buy.

    OVERALL OPINION

I use it for a little less than a year. It is a versatile octaver with lots of character. In fact, two octaves in one. It emulates a boss octave side that adds a sort of saturation and the other a clean octaver type EBS. The idea is good but the problem is that in their respective fields, the Boss and EBS are better off. The tracking of MXR honest even if there is any rotting next to that of BSE.
I prefer to have a Boss + a BSE but it costs me more and I'd rather have the least possible in my pedal chain. So I keep the MXR. A test
