Ashdown Pibass -240 and Mi 12 Speaker Review

π = 240 Watts Ashdown Engineering's PiBass head is the signature model of Polish bass legend Wojtek Pilichowski. I tested it along with the Mi12, a cabinet featuring a 12" speaker. The two products combine to make a 240-watt stack that costs under $900, and has a total weight of under 42 lbs, so it's not hard to see why Audiofanzine pushed me to do this review. read more…

Only One Can Survive Imagine for a moment that a fellow dressed as the mailman shows up at your door when you are about to start playing your favorite instrument: "Ding-dong! It's the mailman! I've got a parcel for you!," says an affable figure, all sweaty, with a tone that is meant to be cheerful. read more…

No fuss, just good tone (Warwick - Sweet 15)

By AlexanderBassSmith, 03/01/2018
I purchased this amp over 9 years ago. In that time I have used it as a practice and gigging amp.

First off, its a no fuss amp and really very easy to get a great tone from. 4 band EQ has not left me wanting at all. The "boost" switches provide a really quick toggle to some nice changes to your bass tone.

I am a really keen user of 1x15 amps because if the really round bottom end you get from it, but the tweeter on the amp really gives you a clean and crisp top end sound from the amp, the tweeter can be turned on and off, I never turned mine off. I have been using this with Jazz and P bass.

Its built to last, as above i have had this amp for some time. It still looks great, the carpet has taken some criticism in other reviews but mine has lasted brilliantly.

Highly recommend.

One criticism, its heavier than other amps of its size. but its a small problem.

Almost perfect for me – except for... (TC Electronic - BG250-210)

By Jet Intake, 30/08/2017
One of the rare combos to feature a 2x10" speaker... Lightweight, yet powerful enough for small stages. Doen not color the instrument excessively... It doesn’t provide a Markbass’s sound of punch either, but for such a price it’s more than enough. The additional integrated tuner is appreciable.

I only regret the absence of an FX loop, and the fact that you can’t combine the 2 "Tone Print" effects.

A nice feature is the possibility to connect the XLR direct out before or after the amp’s EQ…

When I got it, I also appreciated the fact that TC was having a special discount with a free footswitch…

HOWEVER !!! after 18 months using it and a few shows :
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I discovered manufacturing issues, mainly screws badly fixed on a speaker – the tweeter in my case – and the box containing the electronic parts.
But worse even, there are repeated problems with the power supply, causing sparks when powering on and/or playing with the distortion switched on on certain notes. These problems appeared after a show during which I had pushed the volume hard. As a result, 3 shows and as many visits to be serviced. Bad luck, just a bad series? I’ll let you judge.

After 24 months using it :
------------------------------------------
My electronic issues have vanished, I had no need to contact service again. However, the cover vinyl is fragile: it gets scratched off at the merest impact. A flycase is necessary...

Fender Rumble ,good for Upright Bass. (Fender - Rumble 500 V3)

By tradcab, 09/05/2017
I heard a mate using this and was amazed at how good it sounded. Tried it in my double bass set up and bought it straight away. Light to move around, deep bass , especially with the 'vintage' switch pushed in , and as loud as you like.
I have been using it for smaller gigs for the past year, but even on larger stages it fills the space with warm sounding energy. Seems to be reliable so far about 100 gigs in, but I have made a light box to house it and keep it safe in the back of the van.
